Top 25 Game Companies List Includes Activision/Blizzard, Nexon, NCSoft, And Perfect World
NewZoo has put out a ranking of the top 25 publicly traded companies in the world by 2017 gaming revenue. For companies that only manufacture games, like Activision/Blizzard and EA, the numbers come directly from their quarterly revenue statements. For other companies, like Sony and Disney, NewZoo estimated their revenue due to gaming.
At the top of the list, you'll find the usual suspects, with the top five being exactly the same as last year: Tencent, Sony, Apple, Microsoft, and Activision/Blizzard. Further down in the list, you'll find other companies that specialize in free-to-play games and that we cover regularly, such as Nexon (#13), NCSoft (#18), and Perfect World (#23).
NCSoft, in particular, stands out because it's up 104% from 2016, the greatest increase listed on the chart. Lineage 2: Revolution developer Netmarble was #11 on the overall list, up 82%. Only one company, Disney, showed a downturn in its gaming revenue, and that was only a 4% decrease. The 2015 and 2016 listings, which you can also see on NewZoo's site, display a lot more red, so maybe this is a sign that the worldwide gaming industry is on the upswing.
