The Stars Reach Kickstarter Just Went Live And It Already Met Its Funding Goal Of $200K
Looks like it's time to get some stretch goals up already.
The previously delayed Kickstarter campaign for Playable Worlds' upcoming MMORPG Stars Reach is now live. As I've said in previous posts on the topic, I'm not all that keen on a game saying they weren't going to use a Kickstarter campaign changing gears and launching one, particularly a game that already has $40 million from investors. The $200K ask seems weird. However, I've also mentioned that if you have to run one, Stars Reach went about it the right way.
Giving many players access to the game through a multitude of testing phases ahead of the campaign and providing as much detail about the ambitious nature of the world-molding title as the team has is certainly a net good ahead of asking for cash from players.
That method seems to have paid off in spades as the original ask of $200K has already been met and it looks like the team is going to want to add some stretch goals if the number of contributions keeps growing.
While the campaign has a number of tiers that provide numerous in-game rewards, if you want to guarantee yourself access to all future tests through the game's early access phase you'll want to donate at the Reacher Tier or above. It'll set you back $30 or more, depending on the tier you chose.
Post-launch, Stars Reach will be a free-to-play (F2P) title and will be financially supported through supporter packs, Property Passes (which some Kickstarter tiers already include), and a microtransactions cash shop that "won't be pay-to-win."
The Stars Reach team has confirmed that stretch goals are coming and thanked the community saying, “We’re deeply humbled and grateful for this outpouring of support. This is your victory as much as ours, and we can’t wait to take this journey together. But the journey isn't over. The more we raise the faster we can bring this game to market. And the better the game will be.”

The Kickstarter is about sending a signal to investors, proving that there is player interest, and that there are players willing to put down money. They are pretty upfront about that, right on the Kickstarter page, but also in videos, interviews and live chats.
It would seem they have already lined up Investors that will pump more money into the game, but how much exactly will depend on the outcome of the Kickstarter.
