PlanetSide 2 PS4 Beta Not Far Off
We heard about it over a year ago (yes, it's been that long!) and it seems now that the time draws near for a PlanetSide 2 beta on the Playstation 4. In an interview with Eurogamer, Creative Director Matt Higby estimated that the beta would be ready to go by the end of 2014.
Why has it taken so long to port the 2 year old PC title over to the PS4? Higby says it's because they don't want the title to seem like just another port. "As much as it sounds like we're blowing smoke, we're working hard to release a game that feels like a full-on console experience and not just like a port," Higby said, "So it's taken us quite a long time to re-jigger our user interface and our controls. There's a lot that needs to get done."
One thing that hasn't changed is the exclusion of cross platform play. PC players and PS4 players will play on separate instances. Higby says that while it's technically possible to do, with players sinking money into characters on the PC for 2 years and with the update plan SOE plans to take, cross platform functionality just doesn't make sense.
The PS4 version of PlanetSide 2 will still retain the free to play model used by its PC cousin and will be funded with microtransactions that utilize the PS4's Marketplace Cash instead of Station Cash (PS4 DC Universe players already have the idea since that game follows the same model.)
