UPDATED: NCSoft May Have Just Had Its MMORPG Project Using The Horizon IP Cancelled
Don't confuse this project with Guerrilla's planned "multiplayer" Horizon live service title.
Both NCSoft and Sony are having a bit of a hard time right now. With NCSoft's latest financials not pulling their expected weight, the "weak" monetization of Throne and Liberty in the West (and the lackluster performance of the MMORPG in the east), and multiple rounds of layoffs, it's an uncertain time for the developer and its employees.
Sony, for its part, has followed along the same lines and cancelled a number of its own planned live service projects including one reportedly based on the God of War franchise.
It looks like yet another MMORPG project tied to both companies is getting the proverbial axe. Reported on ResertEra, with an original source of Korea's MTN, it seems that what was "Project H" and "Project J" in the NCSoft portfolio have basically been scrubbed from the official sites and teams were notified of the projects' suspensions.
To be clear, Project H was believed to be a Horizon IP-based MMORPG, but that was never officially confirmed by either Sony or NCSoft. The primary indication of the project being based on Horizon came from job listings that had a few details and a title card in the style of Horizon's title cards.
We've reached out to NCSoft for any comment they may have on the reporting, but seeing as they never officially even confirmed this project was a "Horizon MMO," I doubt we'll hear much of a response back. I will update this piece should that prove otherwise, though.
That said, this project should not be confused with the "other" multiplayer title in development using the Horizon property. The original Horizon studio, Guerrilla Games, is believed to still be working on their multiplayer Horizon game which Studio Director Jan-Bart van Beek called in 2023 a "massive shift for the studio, almost on the same level as doing the first Horizon." This was just one of many projects the studio was experimenting with when it comes to the Horizon IP.
UPDATE: While "Project H" may have been cancelled, it appears there's a chance the Horizon MMO may still be a thing. The original MTN reporter clarified they didn't mean the Horizon MMO, and new reports say the project is still moving forward. At this point, I'll believe it when I hear something official from NCSoft.
