Flying Wild Hog And Jagex Partners Reveal Irreverent Sci-Fi Lootfest Space Punks
The collaboration between Jagex and Flying Wild Hog that we learned about last year now has a name and a teaser trailer video. Space Punks is being described as a free-to-play looter shooter with "crazy, over-the-top action in a unique, irreverent sci-fi setting," and you'll be able to play it yourself when it goes into early access later this month.
Space Punks is "designed to be a living, breathing, and ever-changing gameworld," though we're not sure what that means beyond the typical task of any live service game to continue producing content. The official website has next to nothing in the way of info about the game, but we'll be hearing more about it in the near future.
For now, all we have to go on is the trailer, which introduces four smarmy characters: two humans, and pig and insect aliens. Each looks to have their own personalities and talents, which mostly revolve around creative ways to commit violent acts against unfortunate alien foes. Though Jagex and Flying Wild Hog call the game a "looter shooter," the camera angle makes me think more "ARPG."
(That got me thinking, what exactly is the difference between a looter shooter and ARPG, apart from the camera angle and maybe your choice of melee vs. ranged weapons? You kill lots of enemies, loot explodes out of them, rinse, repeat ... same thing, right?)
Space Punks will be available to play via early access on PC on July 14, with open beta planned for this winter and a console release next year.
