As The Stars Reach Kickstarter Comes To A Close, Building Upgrade Unlocks Will Totally Upend How Creative Players Build
I can't wait to see what players create with the upcoming tools.
I actually wasn't quite sure if Stars Reach would make their next stretch goal on the MMORPG's Kickstarter campaign. The last time I wrote about an interview the team did, there were just a few days left in the campaign and incoming funds had slowed to the point that I didn't know if they'd get the last $50K or so they needed. Turns out, they made it and still have about a day to go. I'm thinking they won't make their last 2 stretch goals, but hey, raising over 3 times what they asked for is certainly impressive.
The most recently unlocked stretch goal was actually the one I was most personally interested in, so I'm glad they made it. That's not to say that adding a new playable species isn't cool, it is, but I'm more in tune with building than spending hours in the character creator.
The building system upgrade that is now being added leans heavily into how players have been creating unexpected things in playtesting. Where the original plan was to supply players with tiles that may have a similar asethetic, instead, the team will take things to the next step to allow players to experiment with "primatives," the core shapes used to create tiles. This allows players to literally create almost any shape you want, color it any way you want, and will move the art team over to creating things that can't be built with Primatives (like lights.)
The above picture already shows what is possible with the system, so seeing upgrades that give players the true flexibility to create tiles of their own is really going to open up the possibilities. I love watching videos of gamers building in games in ways I never would have thought about. With these changes, players may end up with more freedom than they've ever had in a "building" game before and I can't wait to see the beauties (and monstrosities) players make.
