As The Fae Joins The Lineup Of Playable Species, Stars Reach Details What It Means To Have “Infinite Worlds”
It seems “infinite” means “enough to accommodate all our players”.
Playable Worlds’ Stars Reach Kickstarter still has nine days to go, and it’s still pinging those stretch goals. As a matter of fact, they’ve brought in more than triple the original goal and, as of March 15, have hit their 5th stretch goal. That means yet another playable Species – the third one to be added as a stretch goal.
According to a post offering more details on the species, the Fae have been a core part of the MMORPG’s concept since the beginning. That might sound a bit strange for a game with no magic, but they’re not exactly magical beings – although some of them believe they might once have been. Whether they were or not, these creatures based on Celtic myth either live in the ducts of the Servitor ships or on one of the various planets the Servitors tend. They have no home planet of their own and are technically the oldest space-faring species in the game.
As the Fae are now officially being added as a playable species, Playable Worlds shared a post offering information not just on their in-game lore, but how they created them. Those interested in the process can find the post on the game’s site.
Speaking of blog posts, another went up earlier today. This one explains how the whole “infinite worlds” thing works in Stars Reach. The basic gist is that the game’s procedural generation allows worlds to be spun up or down depending on the game population. That means that more players will result in more worlds.
As the system determines a new world is needed, it makes a variety of choices to create that world, starting with topography, to create a world unlike any of the others that have been in the game. The system chooses the planet’s temperature and what the skybox looks like – how many moons it has, whether the planet has rings and the like. It may not seem like much, but the post shares some pictures of the same world with these features changed and the whole vibe is different. Of course, the real test will be seeing it all in action.
