Things always change...but that doesn't mean they always IMPROVE!
A Paragon-inspired project actually see the light of day, but can it compete with a crowded field of MOBAs?
When a game doesn't come to your platform of choice...just make one!
Some games, books, and movies just lend themselves to being MMORPGs...but which ones should have been made already?
N1Z1 looks interesting and I'm looking forward to it. DayZ was the first but it was a MOD. Now they're making a standalone version of the game which is good but there is room for 2. I know I saw on Steam there are other Zombie mulitplayer games but I hear either they're not finished or they're not good. So if Sony can make a good zombie MMO then great!
An MMO has to do with 2 things.
1. How many players can play at a time and
2. That the game has an ongoing world. An MMO can have instances, but the majority of the world needs to be open. Lobby games are not MMO's...even if a lobby game can have 1000 players on a server it isn't an MMO because lobby games are confined to playing a certain amount of maps (and game play) over and over again. Games with open worlds you can go anywhere and its for the most part continuous play, you don't have to wait for other players to show up. Lobby games are just multiplayer games. Doom and Quake were not MMO's, but now a days they would probably be considered MMO's to some people. Now some people would say games that are instanced aren't MMO's, but an instanced game just basically takes you from one zone (a cave or another part of the land to another, but its still an ongoing world. Its almost like a portal somewhere else. Overly instanced games are a little lazy but they do make it easy for the developer because then they don't have to make a full world, they can make parts of the world. I think its more lazy to have mobs spawn in front of you in a game than instances.
If you're playing WoW and you're just playing the dungeons all day you're still playing an MMO because WOW is an open world...you're just not playing the MMO portion of WoW.
What do I think MMO's are lacking. Hmmm, there is so much. I would like to see MMO's that have more aspects of single player games. Like if you're a thief, you actually steal things and stealing has consequences if you're seen. Or when you kill a boss, he's dead. I know other people have to kill it but here is where I think instancing would be good. You go into an instanced area to kill a boss and when you're done you never see that boss again, he's dead in your game. Now if you have a friend that hasn't killed the boss and you want to help him/her they can share the quest or bring you into their group and you can help them, but otherwise the boss is dead. One thing that I hate is when I pass an area that I've already killed the boss and I see a mob of people fighting it, it just makes me sad because I killed him but he's not dead. lol Also mobs that spawn in front of you. I like games that someone may run away and get some other help or even when help just runs at you, but to see a MOB materialize in front of you, just doesn't seem right. Now in Star Trek it might be ok because they'd beam from a ship, but even that may get a little dull after a while.
people always have their preferences. ive played a few games where ive thought, 'wow if this game only did X a bit different'. some players like full loot pvp, others don't for example.
now obviously there is no way to hit all of the possibilities but a few variations could really make good games more popular or even give it a game a different flavor by just switching servers.
