It came at the right time with the right IP, but does it deliver?
With Overwatch having some recent woes, there's certainly space for a strong competitor.
1) you can over level for skill/hero points,
2) masteries are removed or let players spend skill/hero points to unlock them, and
3) replace all open world map currencies with just karma and gold.
Today progression is hunting f-bomb achievements for points to unlock masteries then a near linear path through the hero points to unlock elite specs on alts. Other than the small amount of exp for masteries the rest of the open world content is useless for progression giving no reason to revisit it on alts.
Back then when all I really needed was exp and gold the game didn't care what content I did as long as I did enough of it. This let the game use curiosity and other intrinsic rewards to drag me around the world in what felt like a real adventure through Tyria. Back then the game would suck me in so hard I would look at a clock later to realize it was hours past my bed time and I gained multiple levels without even noticing. That's the Guild Wars 2 experience I want back. I want that freedom and adventure back, not another f-bomb chore list that pulls me out of the game to unlock game mechanics.
