I used to be a hardcore player of SoF. I played in SEA, Vietnam and US servers, plus a few days in Thai and Taiwan servers.
Overall, it's not a bad game but either a good one. Since it is an old game, it doesn't have flashy graphic. The mechanics are very easy. Diversity in terms of building paths is quite low. All characters have only 1 building path as you will eventually max all your abilities so it does not make any difference.
SoF is a very newbie friendly game, it is easy to learn. Furthermore, they have developed a lot of bots to cope with the heavy grinding nature of this game. Likewise, you don't have to do much on a daily basis. All you need to do is to login the game, open the bots (not the ingame bots) and leave your characters without worrying them running out of potions or full inventories because the bots will take care of them. The only thing that seems to be manually functioned is PvP and arenas.
The game starts out quite comfortable and easy. The drop rate pre-60-level is extremely high, you will have a full inventory in less than 2 hours, gold are gears not a concern during this phase. In fact, you can get free gears by doing some beginner quests, those gears can easily get you to 60. The leveling process will get slower as your level gets higher, it's normal, though it will get much slower after level 55.
The game truly starts after you reach 60. By then, your beginner gears get much weaker as the monsters' power is significantly increased, they are stronger and tankier. You definitely have to get a serious weapon if you want to survive. This may sound like an exaggerating statement because in fact, you can do well with the beginner weapon, if only you have a solid party which is impossible to find nowadays since most of the players are now in Ascension (level 110>). Therefore, you need to be strong enough to solo through the game. But even if you have a party, you will need to upgrade your weapon at some point after level 70, you don't want to deal 100 damage to a monster who have 2500 HP, do you?
After reaching level 80, the difficulty is on a whole new level. No more beginner gear quests so you have to find suitable gears for your level and start doing some gambling with enhancing your gears. This is the trickiest part of the game as it is the most efficient way to boost your power, a game changing element. However, it relies completely on luck, you may invest everything to have on an item and lose it in one click. It's hard to explain about this but you will experience it when you play. It is the most frustrating, yet interesting aspect of SoF.
There is one thing you must do: get a party, either playing with a group of friends or create 5 to 7 accounts/characters to form a party. You are able to solo through level 60 with ease if you have decent gears. But you definitely won't last long when you reach higher levels even if you acquire the best gears with all maxed stats.
If you are looking for an easy game to play without having spending too much time on learning it, this is what you're looking for. SoF is not full pay-to-win yet it's not free-to-win either. There are some items that is worth a decent amount of money so if you're lucky enough, you can milk it a little bit. You can play it freely, almost nothing requires you to spend money on but you may have to if you want to boost your QoL in this game.
