Yes, Steam's Disclosure Requirements Forced Call Of Duty To Acknowledge Using AI To Generate Some Game Assets
We've all thought they've been doing so for months, but now it's confirmed.
While this news may fall under the "water is wet" level of information, we now have official confirmation from Activision Blizzard. The Call of Duty developer has updated the shooter's Steam page to abide by Steam disclosure policies when it comes to companies using AI. The update confirms the company's usage of AI to create some in-game assets.
This hasn't exactly been a secret, though. Players already suspected as much for months now thanks to some dubious inclusions in cash shop bundles and the notorious six-fingered Santa loading screen. CharlieINTEL noticed the disclosure update and tweeted it out much to the chagrin of players already accusing the company of being sloppy with AI and trying to rake in cash.
Now, Activision has been playing pretty coy on this topic and staying away from comments for quite some time. However, the disclosure doesn't indicate the level of AI usage, what specific games may be using it, and if the company uses it to quickly create cash shop items, but I'm sure we can all make a few educated guesses.
Don't misunderstand, the use of AI in games can be used for good. The company's recent use of AI to detect cheaters was well received. Feeling like you're getting the lazy end of the stick on cosmetics while the company charges the usual rates is not where we want to see this technology being used, though.
