Warner Bros. Shutters Three Studios And Cancels Games As It Adjusts Its Structure
Is anyone really surprised?
In news that might be disappointing, but somehow isn’t all that shocking, Warner Bros. is shutting down three game studios – one being Monolith Productions, which was in charge of the upcoming Wonder Woman title. In case you’re wondering, that title is no more. Once again, WB’s decisions are based on the premise of focusing on four specific franchises it feels can make it the most money: Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, and DC. When they say DC, they apparently really mean Batman – at least according to a report on Bloomberg.
The focus on these four franchises is nothing new for the publisher. The plan to concentrate on them was revealed in March of 2024 when the company was also discussing its plans to expand on free-to-play live service games.
According to a statement obtained by Kotaku, the decision to close Monolith Productions along with Player First Games (the studio behind the recently-announced-as-closing MultiVersus) and Warner Bros. Games San Diego is “a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them.”
The statement goes on to add that the “Wonder Woman videogame will not move forward”, noting that they’d hoped “to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character” and stating that isn’t possible “within [their] strategic priorities”.
