As Subscriber Revenue Climbs, Upcoming Final Fantasy XIV VR Mod Could Make Things A Bit Weird
Some folks’ll find out for sure in about two weeks.
However you feel about them, modders gonna mod. While we all know Square Enix takes a dim – although mostly hands-off – view of people modding its beloved MMO Final Fantasy XIV, we also know that’s not really stopping anyone from doing it. Partially because it’s not the modder they go after, but the users who manage to get caught.
So, it shouldn’t be surprising that Flat2VR, the modders who worked on a VR port for Half-Life 2 are now working on one for Final Fantasy XIV. Based on the video posted on their Twitter page, the mod will let players get really up close and personal – and at some weird funky angles. So… Uh… maybe if you’re a streamer don’t stream that? Unless you’d like to go to XIV jail?
According to the tweet, the mod will support first and third-person views, motion controls, and more. A follow-up tweet states that alpha testing for the mod will go live in about two weeks. They also announced channels are available for people who want to discuss it in their Discord server.

In other news, things are apparently going pretty well at Square Enix financially – mostly because of the increase of subscribed Final Fantasy XIV players. According to a tweet from Aitaikimochi, the company’s April – September 2022 earnings came out to be about $267 million USD. That’s 71% higher than the year before. (Kinda wondering how much of that can be attributed to the Megashiba mount.)
Square Enix revealed their first half (April-September 2022) 2023 fiscal year net profit earnings equal to 39,400,000,000yen (~$267 million USD), which is a 71% increase fromm the previous fiscal year.
The profit increase is partly due to the large influx of paid subs for FFXIV. https://t.co/n0YkfNfX3H pic.twitter.com/aXSWXHfhOd
