Ubisoft's "Restructuring" Closes A Studio And Downsizes Elsewhere Resulting In 185 Layoffs
This likely isn't surprising, but that doesn't make it unfortunate still.
More bad news coming from the Ubisoft camp as the "resphaping" of the group now results in 185 confirmed layoffs. While this probably doesn't come as a surprise to any of you following the woes of the gaming company lately, it still doesn't make it easy news to report or hear for those impacted by the cuts made by the company.
After appointing a group of "leading advisors" to help plan out a route through the financial tribulations at Ubisoft, other rumored plans for the company's future emerged included the possibility of a purchase, a funneling-off of IPs into another company that both Tencent and the Guillemot family would fund, and some other potential "solutions."
This all comes on the heels of Star Wars Outlaws underperforming, the closure of shooter XDefiant, and the second delay of the upcoming Assassins Creed Shadows.
The layoffs will see Ubisoft Leamington shuttered. Previously known for the DJ Hero series, Leamington has been more of a support studio lately, assisting with development of Star Wars Outlaws and the Far Cry series. The reductions also impact Ubisoft Stockholm, Ubisoft Reflections, and Ubisoft Düsseldorf.
In a statement the company supplied to Video Games Chronicles, a Ubisoft representative said, "As part of our ongoing efforts to prioritize projects and reduce costs that ensure long-term stability at Ubisoft, we have announced targeted restructurings at Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Stockholm and Ubisoft Reflections and the permanent closure of Ubisoft Leamington site. Unfortunately, this should impact 185 employees overall. We are deeply grateful for their contributions and are committed to supporting them through this transition”
We hope those impacted by the latest round of 2025 gaming layoffs land on their feet as soon as possible.
