Remember back in 2022 when Sony announced they were targeting the launch of at least 12 new live service games by 2026? The purchase of Bungie was supposed to be a key acquisition in that grand plan given their live service experience. However, leadership changes at Sony since then seemed to change that plan a bit in the subsequent years, but we still saw live service offerings coming from the console manufacturer.

Some, like Helldivers 2, went crazy , sold well, and were well received. Others, like Concord, didn't even make it to their second birthday...and by "second" I mean second week.

According to Jason Schreier over at Bloomberg, two more live service projects currently in development at Sony have just been cancelled. The games were being worked on by Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games, with Schreier reporting that the Bluepoint project was a live-service God of War game.

The future of both studios doesn't seem to be in question as a Sony spokesperson said, "Bend and Bluepoint are highly accomplished teams who are valued members of the PlayStation Studios family, and we are working closely with each studio to determine what are the next projects."

That said, layoffs are likely if I had to guess. While moving many employees over to other projects is welcome news, I can't imagine there won't be some "redundancies" in the process. A memo to employees, reviewed by Bloomberg, claimed the moves would be made with "minimal business disruption."
