Turns Out SEGA's 'Super Game' Is More Than One Game And They Plan To Use NFTs
"We are thinking of creating new entertainment within these possibilities.”
It seems like the Japanese game publishing giant SEGA has revealed more information surrounding their 'Super Game' project. What was once believed to be one game are actually multiple games under this project. Yet no one really knows what to expect besides their involvement with cloud gaming and NFT technology.
Back in May 2021, SEGA's financial results presentation presented a long-term plan: a five-year strategy called "creation of Super Game." There was a lot of head-scratching about it when it was revealed, and increasingly so when their parent company, SEGA Sammy, claimed to invest up to $882 million to achieve the ambitions of the "Super Game" project. Whatever SEGA had planned was obviously intended to be high-budget. Luckily, a recent interview with executive VP Shuji Utsumi helps shed more light on the subject:
"'SuperGame’ title has to meet four main criteria: “(i) multi-platform, (ii) global multi-language development, (iii) simultaneous worldwide release, and (iv) AAA titles. In other words, you can imagine that the scale of game development will be that of a global blockbuster.”
From his quote, you can assume there's a massive movement occurring to set up for the next several years. Whether that's an attractive prospect for long-time fans of their franchises remains to be seen. It is a bit worrying, however, because SEGA has constantly been searching for ways of expanding beyond the roots that garnered them fame. Would incorporating cloud gaming and NFTs into their future projects steer the company in the wrong direction?
