Report: Things Are Changing At Blizzard As New Studio Dedicated To Smaller Games Is Formed
Employees from other areas of Activision have formed a new team.
It looks like Microsoft is moving forward with its plans to utilize those Blizzard IPs that are just waiting to be used. According to a report from Windows Central, a new, smaller team has been formed under the Blizzard umbrella, dedicated to creating smaller games based on the World of Warcraft developer’s IPs. One such IP mentioned by Xbox boss Phil Spencer in a previous discussion is the RTS StarCraft.
According to the report, employees of the mobile developer King have been updating their LinkedIn profiles and switching them to Blizzard. In addition, Windows Central’s sources lead them to believe that Microsoft and Activision approved the creation of a new team under Blizzard. This team will reportedly work on smaller games. Think AA rather than AAA. As many of the staff that make up this team come from King, it’s likely that the games they will be developing could be mobile games based on the various Blizzard IPs. That said, they may not be strictly mobile, as Microsoft is looking to cater to as many players as possible, which means as many platforms as possible.
It’ll be interesting to see what comes out of this new team. Maybe fans of some of Blizzard’s less-used projects will get some love.
