After just a bit under a week since it released, Final Fantasy XIV’s The Omega Protocol Ultimate was completed this morning. At that point, the race for World First was called and UNNAMED_ declared the winner. As of now, it seems the race isn’t officially over – even if the team did finish first. The reason? According to a video, they cheated according to many, using the zoom-out mod. We won’t embed the video here, but you can follow the link to YouTube and see it if you’re not worried about spoilers.

This mod allows players to see all of the platform and the sides in full from above. This circumvents the intended build of the game, as the limited view is part of the designed challenge. The video also shows other mods. Although, they likely had less of an impact on the progression and seem to be more for standard DPS tracking and the like.

So, how do we know that this is, in fact, UNNAMED_ and not some other team? The team’s roster was shared this morning with news of the win. If you look at the party list in the video, you’ll see all of the names there.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this happen, and we’re sure we’ll be hearing about it from Yoshi-P and the rest of the dev team – in the most disappointed tone ever. It’s also pretty likely the team in question will be sent to XIV jail, or just lose their accounts. And, of course, this will bring back the topic of what’s going on behind the scenes with teams aren’t streaming their progression. It doesn’t necessarily mean that someone’s cheating, but incidents like this don’t exactly dispel that impression.

In the meantime, we’re already getting some memes out of it, so that’s fun at least. Spoilers on the second one (and a language warning).
