The Popular Social Deception Game Among Us Was Almost Canceled Back In 2019
“We were basically done with Among Us…”
At this point in time, very few people don’t know about the game Among Us. The game was originally released in June of 2018, but only gained its insane popularity in 2020 during the start of the pandemic. In the fourth quarter of 2020 alone, Twitch viewers watched over 221 million hours of Among Us across 1.22 billion viewing sessions, with 4.32 million hours broadcast total.
Knowing this, it is crazy to think that Among Us was almost canceled according to Innersloth co-founder Marcus Bromander. Back in 2019 the Among Us player count was declining. “We were basically done with Among Us at the start of 2019,” explains Bromander in an interview on the Visionaries podcast. The team even decided that “[It was] time to start working on something else.” However, Among Us’s surge in popularity was something the team just couldn't ignore.
While a sequel seemed the best course of action, the team decided against it and instead went for releasing updates for the game that people were already enjoying. Among Us 2 may have been scrapped, but the original Among Us is still going strong and receiving plenty of bug fixes and improvements, like introducing Ghostface from Scream in Among Us’s first ever film crossover.
