The Last Hearthstone Update Made It Inaccessible To Blind Players According To A Recent Post On Reddit
The issue stems from support for visual impairment being supplied by a third party mod developer.
Since the most recent Hearthstone patch, blind and visually impaired players have been largely unable to play, according to a post on Reddit. The post, created by BlindAsABatGirl (amazing name), explains that the issue is the result of Blizzard using a third-party mod developer to provide support for these players. The developer in question is on vacation and, as a result, hasn’t been able to update the mod to work with the new content. At present, the update isn’t expected until mid-September at best.
The post doesn’t lay blame on the Hearthstone devs or the mod developer, known as GuideDev, but it does make an important point. After a full year of the mod existing, why has Blizzard not put some resources toward making it available natively? As it stands now, each time the game is updated, players who rely on this accessibility mod can be left unable to play for weeks if the third-party developer is unavailable.
As pointed out, if Blizzard can spend time reworking Runestone, they can probably afford to put some in-house effort into making their games more accessible – without relying on third-party modders to do it. The money spent on all the bundles, skins, and more could probably go toward that.
