International Olympic Committee Esports

Back in July, the International Olympic Committee endorsed an esports Olympic games proposal which would make the digital gaming events more official than they have been in the past. The committee also agreed to hold the games in Saudi Arabia this year. Now, it seems plans are being pushed back.

According to a report on SportBusiness (via PC Gamer), the games may delayed until 2027 for a few reasons. One of these is that those organizing the event simply need more time to organize by figuring out housing and financing. A spokesperson told PC Gamer that the esports hosting model would be different from the traditional Olympic Games model and that “organizing the Olympic Games of esports is just as important as developing a roadmap to the event, which will need to raise awareness of the Games, promote them and engage participants”. The spokesperson also said that discussions are ongoing.

If you were planning on watching some Olympic esports this year, you’re going to have to wait.
