The Dauntless "Revamp" Literally Just Ended The Game, Shutdown Scheduled For May
This was the most likely outcome after mass layoffs hit the team.
Phoenix Labs has announced that Dauntless is not long for this world. After the monster-hunting game tried a "revamp" back in December with the "Awakening" update, Phoenix Labs (and their new crypto-centric owners) met with huge backlash as the game removed things players had earned throughout the years and revamped some systems in ways that were aggressively monetized. The addition of loot boxes was certainly a choice, too.
The end of January saw Phoenix Labs lay off the "majority" of the studio, and the future of both Dauntless and Fae Farm, really the only 2 projects the company focused on anymore, would be detailed at a later date.
That later date is now and the 100% predictable has happened. Dauntless will close up shop on May 29, 2025. On that day, you won't be able to play at all going forward. The announcement comes via the Dauntless X (formerly Twitter) account and is incredibly brief and doesn't allow commenting by anyone not tagged in the original post. That hasn't stopped players from expressing their frustration with the game basically being murdered over on Steam and reddit.
As of this writing, there isn't any word on the Fae Farm account or on their Steam page about the future of that title. We also don't have any word on the future of Phoenix Labs itself and if this closure will bring more layoffs. We'll update this piece if we hear news on either of those fronts.
