Star Trek Online Raises $35,000 for Pop Culture Hero Coalition
Star Trek Online’s community of players has raised over $35,000 to support the anti-bullying organization Pop Culture Hero Coalition. The PCHC is the passion project of Chase Masterson, who played Leeta in Deep Space Nine and continues to voice the character in the free-to-play Star Trek MMO. Its mission is to take a stand against bullying, racism, misognyny, cyber-bullying, LGBT-bullying, and other forms of hate.
The money was raised by selling a limited number of T1 ships and shuttles and T6 ships on Groupees.com, with Perfect World Entertainment donating the net proceeds to the organization. Players showed incredible support for the fundraising efforts, managing to raise $35k in just a few days.
“We’re so proud of our community for banding together to support Pop Culture Hero Coalition,” said Star Trek Online Executive Producer Steve Ricossa.“We’ve always known that we wanted to support this cause. Not only because Chase Masterson is an important member of the Star Trek Online family, but also because we fully stand behind the organization’s commitment to put an end to bullying. We can’t wait to see how Pop Culture Hero Coalition will use our contribution to change lives.”
The money raised will be used to promote the Pop Culture Hero Coalition at conventions and other geek gatherings and fund anti-bullying campaigns in inner-city schools.
