Square Enix's MMO Business Is Down 14% Without Expansions
Somebody better get to making an expansion quick.
Square Enix has released its end-of-year financials, and the MMORPG side of things isn't looking so hot this past year.
With Final Fantasy XIV and Dragon Quest X being the primary MMO games in operation, Square Enix pulled in ¥53.3 billion ($394 million) in revenue. That's down 14% year over year. Neither game received a new expansion during this cycle, and Square was focused on user retainment via operational initiatives according to GamesIndustry.biz.
Mobile games didn't fair much better, down 13% YoY. HD games, which include the much-maligned Forspoken, Octopath Traveler 2, and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, were down 10% compared to last year.
Net sales for Square Enix were down 6% YoY, profit was down 3%, and digital entertainment revenue was down 12%
Not exactly a stellar showing this past year, but we are still talking millions of dollars here.
