Square Enix Announces Steam Version Account Linking For Final Fantasy XIV
This new system will tie players’ Steam accounts to their Square Enix accounts.
Square Enix is tightening up security for Final Fantasy XIV players accessing the game through the Steam platform. As things stand now, Steam version accounts can be “launched from any instance” of Steam software, making them accessible on those versions. In March, this is going to change.
In March, Square Enix will require players to log into their Final Fantasy XIV account via Steam to link it to their Square Enix account. After that, players will need their Square Enix and Steam accounts to match in order for the game to launch. It also means that players will need to launch the game from the Steam library – if they haven’t been. Another requirement will be for players to use the new launcher layout implemented with 6.0 – again, provided they haven’t been.
Before this happens, players using Steam may want to check their game license info and make sure the one on their preferred Square account matches the one on Steam. This can be checked via the Steam app by clicking the Steam display name, then “Account details”. Under the top section, “Store & Purchase History” there will be an option to view your license and product keys. It’ll probably help if you have some idea of when you purchased the game, as that’s how it’s sorted.
