UPDATED: Sony Has Allegedly Been Compromised By Hackers Who Are Selling The Data They've Collected

A hacker group going by the name Ransomed.vc has reportedly compromised Sony and acquired some 6,000 files including unknown "build log files, Java resources, and HTML data. This according to Australian cybersecurity publication Cyber Security Connect.

“We have successfully [compromised] all of [Sony’s] systems,” Ransomed.vc said in a statement. “We won’t ransom them! We will sell the data. Due to Sony not wanting to pay. DATA IS FOR SALE. WE ARE SELLING IT.”

If no buyer is found by September 28, 2023, it looks like the group plans to publish the data openly.

In a strange twist, Ransomed.vc claims to be a “secure solution for addressing data security vulnerabilities within companies”, but also to be operating “in strict compliance with GDPR and Data Privacy Laws”.

“In cases where payment is not received, we are obligated to report a Data Privacy Law violation to the GDPR agency!” the group says on their site.

So far Sony has yet to announce any cyber security attacks.

Readers will of course recall the great PlayStation Network hack of 2011 where 77 million registered accounts were compromised and online features were rendered totally inoperable. This may not seem like much compared to the 2011 attack, but it is still not a good look for Sony to be hacked again in any way.

UPDATE 9/26/2023: Sony has told IGN, "“We are currently investigating the situation, and we have no further comment at this time.”
