Sony Acquires Firewalk Studios, New Multiplayer IP In Development
The developer is the 20th game company to join the PlayStation Studios lineup.
Sony acquired Firewalk Studios, making the developer the 20th company to be a part of PlayStation Studios.
“The studio shares our passion for creating inspiring worlds grounded in exceptional gameplay, and we want to continue to invest in their mission,” Hermen Hulst, the head of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, said in a statement.
Sony was already working with Firewalk Studios, which was formally with indie gaming company Probably Monsters. Together, the teams have been working on a multiplayer IP that has yet to be officially announced. Of interesting note, though, Firewalk Studios, which was founded in 2018, has not actually released a game yet.
“Firewalk’s innovative approach to connected storytelling and its commitment to high-quality gameplay continues to exceed our expectations,” he added. “I think fans will be very pleased when they see what Firewalk has in store for them.”
And it seems Firewalk Studios is excited too, as lead Tony Hsu said he and his team started the company “with this kind of spark at the heart of our games,” back in 2021 when the publishing partnership was first announced along with the aforementioned multiplayer IP.
“It’s why I used to stay up until 2 AM playing Phantasy Star Online night after night with the same group from Server 9,” Hsu said in a statement. “Or how the neighbors who showed up at my NYC apartment to complain about the noise, ended up jamming with us in Rock Band instead.”
Let’s hope this fresh collaboration flourishes and, most importantly, that this new game is a hit.
