UPDATED: Say Goodbye To Your Progress: Bungie Gets Some Backlash On Hotfix That Will Roll Back Destiny 2 Player Accounts
What started as a way of fixing things ended up shaving off hours of playtime.
Recently, Bungie updated Destiny 2 players that they're "testing a fix" for several Triumphs that had their progress reset unexpectedly. It was a nasty issue that saw players lose their hard-earned achievements.
Alongside that announcement via Twitter, the developer also stated they will roll back "all player accounts" to their state as of 8:20 a.m. Pacific Time. As you might expect, players weren't happy with the decision.
We are testing a fix. Once testing is complete, we will deploy and verify the fix before bringing Destiny 2 back online.
We will also be rolling back all player accounts to their state as of 8:20 AM PST, prior to Hotfix 6.3.0.5 going live.
Standby for timeline updates.

One player said they had "leveled up 3 new characters to max light + finished 3 weekly flawless trials in that time," while another questioned why Bungie didn't test the patch beforehand. It has caused quite an uproar on Twitter in such a short time.
As of this writing, Destiny 2 is currently offline and will remain that way into the evening. Bungie aims to share more concrete timeline updates for bringing Destiny 2 back online once they know more.
UPDATE: Hotfix 6.3.0.6 maintenance is complete. However, Rumble Crucible mode is unavailable as a standalone playlist, and players cannot interact with the Evidence Board at the Enclave. Bungie is investigating these issues and will share more details when available. Furthermore, some in-game enemies may continue to drop Rare (blue) engrams when players reach the soft cap. The developer aims to resolve this in a future update. As a reminder, account roll back will send all player accounts to 8:20 a.m. Pacific Time.
UPDATE 1-27-2023: The latest "This Week At Bungie" post clarified what the issue was, why it led to a rollback, and why it's unlikely to happen again. In part the team said, "We discovered that the issue was caused when some currently incompletable EDZ and Nessus Triumphs were moved from Forsaken into the archived Triumphs section. To make that change, we used a tool that can move player state from one location to another in the player’s account. This tool is very powerful but requires careful and cautious handling. Due to a configuration error, we accidentally re-ran an older state migration process used for the Beyond Light release. As a result, we ended up re-copying old data from before Beyond Light into the current configuration, essentially undoing certain aspects of player progression since then."
