Roblox Continues Parental Control Changes Restricting Use Of DMs For Kids Under 13
Parents will be able to remotely view their child’s account and monitor access to chat features.
Roblox is continuing its efforts to address safety for children on its platform. Today, the company implemented changes to the platform’s parental control systems – particularly around chat. The new settings will allow parents to access their children’s accounts, including items such as the friend list, and monitor various chat features. In addition, children under the age of 13 will no longer be able to use direct messages and will be limited in what messages they can send.
Chat is not the only thing that is being addressed as content labels are being introduced. These replace experience guidelines, detailing what players and parents can expect to experience. The guidelines will restrict access to certain types of content based on user age. Those under 9 will have minimal access to mild content, although parents can make adjustments. Those under 17 will be blocked from anything under a “restricted” content label.
As noted on GamesIndustry.biz, the changes are supported by various organizations such as the Family Online Safety Institute. These changes were announced in October following criticism regarding how the company has been dealing with children on the Roblox platform.
