Riot Discusses The Making Of League of Legends' Arena Mode In New Dev Diary
The company aimed at providing players with a "lower-stress" experience
How did Riot Games come up with the new Arena mode for League of Legends?
Well, for starters, the company aimed at providing players with a "lower-stress" experience, according to the latest dev diary. The decision to create Arena came after Riot recognized that players had been feeling underserved, leading to a sense of urgency in delivering a new game mode to the MOBA this year. Initially, the development team planned to release Arena in 2024, but they were asked to speed up the process and deliver it in summer 2023.
The development process for Arena involved addressing various issues and ensuring the mode had depth and longevity. To achieve this, the company incorporated Augments from Teamfight Tactics and introduced a new terrain type called Deep Water to aid ranged champions in the compact Arena map. Additionally, champion cameos, such as Sett and Lux, were added to add strategic complexity to the gameplay. Riot hopes that Arena will attract players who might not resonate with the traditional Summoner's Rift map, providing an alternative and enjoyable experience.
Despite the challenges faced during development, the company is pleased with the reception of Arena and hope that players will continue to enjoy and engage with the new game mode in the future. The mode's success relies on its ability to capture the interest and loyalty of players seeking a different experience within the League of Legends universe.
