Respawn Discusses The Future Of Apex Legends Following The Introduction Of Mad Maggie
States that “battle royale needs to evolve”.
In January, Respawn introduced the Maori freedom fighter, Mad Maggie, to Apex Legends as its most recent Legend. They’re also getting ready to kick off the game’s 12th season of content and, as of today, is celebrating its third anniversary. As you’d expect, Respawn has been doing a bit of chatting about their games. The most recent being a presentation in which they covered the creation process behind Mad Maggie: the influences and how they went about representing her culture, among other things, all of which can be found in this post on Eurogamer. But, that wasn’t all they discussed while they were there.
In addition to the Mad Maggie content, Respawn also discussed the upcoming Season and touched on their philosophy going forward with the game. If any of you were worrying about them moving away from battle royale, don’t. That said, they do believe that “battle royale needs to evolve”. Their hope is to bring in players who may have been sitting out because of the current nature of battle royale but are otherwise interested in the game’s world. To that end, they hope to ease players in by actually teaching them how to play and allowing them to get their footing in a game where so many already know what they’re doing.
Design Directo Evan Nikolich also went on to say that for him, a big thing is to have the community continue to “feel valued, engaged, and really keep on building the hobby and building out the world”.
In additional Apex Legends news, Principal Level Designer Rodney Reece revealed that today was his last day at Respawn. He’s not yet said what he’ll be doing next, but we’re sure fans will be hearing something soon.
Today is my last day at @Respawn @PlayApex has been an amazing adventure and I am exited to be a fan from the outside.
To all the players out there who gave their time to play my silly levels: thank you. You were always in my mind and made me work harder. pic.twitter.com/9svMwRgR0P
