Remember How Daybreak Sold the Planetside IP? It Hasn’t Really Left The Family.

PlanetSide 2 Toadman Interactive

Ah, the never-ending shuffle as another game changes hands. This time it’s not a big surprise. After all, it’s only been a couple of months since Daybreak revealed they’d sold the PlanetSide for $5.9 million US. What might be unexpected is who the IP has gone to.

Yesterday, that question was answered with a letter from Toadman Interactive. (Yes, the people bringing us the vampire co-op shooter EvilVEvil.) According to the letter on the PlanetSide 2 site, Toadman is taking over the development of the game. The letter goes on to discuss the developer’s plans for the game in the future. It also notes that they were not the purchaser of the franchise and will continue to work with Daybreak Games “to ensure the game continues to receive best-in-class marketing and community support”.

If you’re wondering who did purchase the PlanetSide IP, it’s been sold to Bay Tree Tower Limited. Details on exactly who that is are limited, although MassivelyOP notes that a private equity company named Bay Tree exists. The interesting thing here, however, is that Toadman Interactive is not under Bay Tree Tower Limited. They, like Daybreak, are under EG7’s umbrella. The most likely explanation of this is that Bay Tree Tower Limited doesn’t actually do the development of video games, but figured a video game IP in their portfolio would be nice.

What does that mean for players? Well, the letter from Toadman Interactive seems fairly positive, but then developers as a rule tend to try to have a positive outlook for whatever games they take on. By now, we all know the true fate of any game rests with the money people. Of course, players are at best a bit annoyed and at worst figuring PlanetSide 2 will be headed into full-on maintenance mode any time now.

We do have a roadmap from the team but, as players have been pointing out, it is a bit broad and doesn't specifically call out console improvements.
