PSO2 New Genesis "Performing Strongly" For Sega, As PSO2 Series Reaches 9 Million Users
Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis did big business for Sega -- or more specifically Sega Sammy -- following its global launch in June, as revealed in the company's most recent financial statement.
All titles released in the last quarter totaled 12.4 billion yen in revenue, or about $112 million USD. PSO2:NG led the way, helping the Phantasy Star franchise achieve its highest monthly active user count ever and helping the PSO2 franchise break the 100 billion yen mark overall.
The total number of "registered users" for the franchise is up to nine million -- 6.5 million in Japan and 2.5 million overseas -- though one has to wonder if there's some double-, or even triple-counting, going on there. For instance, Magicman has played PSO2 Japan, PSO2 US, and PSO2:NG. The latter two use the same account, so they might not be counted separately, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were, too.
In other financial facts for the company, gaming sales were mostly the same in the last quarter as they were for the same quarter in 2020, despite some significant upticks for the quarters in between. And despite its strong start, New Genesis wasn't even the company's #1 title in terms of sales for the quarter. That honor went to Project Sekai: Colorful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku, a rhythm game featuring virtual singers. Yes, it's only available in Japan, how did you guess?

Not to mention, that registered accounts and active players are way too different things, SEGA might be showing off that they've reached 9m mark registered accounts...but can they guarantee that even 50% is even playing it? I haven't seen orange or red ships since 2nd week of NGS release...which means they're not even 50% full... and if other ships as populated as ship 2 it will mean they are mostly dead (62-64 are farming blocks which are almost at full capacity... and other blocks have barely 10 players across all areas)
