Project L Monetization

Today, Riot Games dropped a new, and brief, dev diary talking about the company’s plans for the future of the upcoming 2D fighter Project L. The video reiterates some of the things discussed in previous Dev Diaries, such as the focus on creating an assist-based fighter with two champions on each team as well as the work going into the game’s core mechanics and champion building. But, the big focus in this dev diary is on how they plan to remove barriers of entry to the game and ensure that players can join in no matter where they are or how much money they have.

Not that any of us are likely surprised, what with Riot being Riot and all, but as part of this goal, the dev video confirms that Project L will be free-to-play. If players are worried about whether or not this means Riot plans to use less-than-ethical practices in procuring money from players via the game’s monetization system, the video goes on to assure that they’re using the approach of “if [they] wouldn’t like it, [they] won’t do it.” They also add that “when it comes to monetization, [they] promise to be respectful of both [the player’s] time and [their] wallet.” That’s great news is they stick to that approach.

For those wondering what else is going on with the game, the Project L team has a new blog post up highlighting a new fighter being added to the game – Illaoi, the Kraken Priestess. Illaoi tests souls for her “tentacled god”. Sounds creepy…
