Planetside 2 to get first major optimization patch in October
While SOE seemed to have drug its feet in the past when it came to addressing major performance issues, the company now seems to have hurled itself into a full on sprint. Just a little over a week ago SOE announced their Operation: Make Game Faster initiative, a slightly cheesy but sincere attempt to pull back the veil and show players the efforts the studio is putting towards these trouble areas.
Surprisingly, according to an official announcement posted yesterday on the Planetside 2 forums, SOE has already improved the frame rate on their test hardware by up to 30 percent. The announcement goes on to mention that there is still more to be done, but SOE knowing how their community has been anxiously awaiting the news, wanted to share some tentative dates of when the developer intends to release some of the improvements.
At their current pace, the first major optimization patch will be completed internally on October 9th. Shortly thereafter, SOE will release the patch on the Public Test server in order to verify the performance increases the studio was seeing internally. Finally, on October 23rd the first major optimization patch will be released.
Of course these dates are all tentative. Things can and often spring up which require extra attention and can sometimes slightly delay a patch. However, it's pretty safe to assume the new update will arrive in late October regardless.
