Overwatch 2’s Launch Day Thwarted By Multiple Mass DDoS Attacks.
You weren't expecting a flawless launch, were you?
Overwatch 2’s launch date hasn't gone as smoothly as players and devs would have liked. What should have been a day filled with decent game queues, a start to the new battle pass, and testing out new characters has turned into players having drop/connection issues, missing in-game skins, and some unable to even log in due to the excessive queue times.
These issues are all due to a DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack against Blizzard. These attacks are relatively easy to execute but extremely hard to defend against. Add that to a launch day and things just get even more overwhelming. Blizzard president Mike Ybarra addressed the situation on Twitter. "Unfortunately we are experiencing a mass DDoS attack on our servers. Teams are working hard to mitigate/manage. This is causing a lot of drop/connection issues."
This attack in no way puts a player's data or passwords in danger it just creates a very frustrating situation.
“We’re steadily making progress on server issues and stability, as well as working through a second DDoS attack. We’re all hands on deck and will continue to work throughout the night. Thank you for your patience - we’ll share more info as it becomes available,” added Overwatch 2's Game Director Aaron Keller in regards to the second attack.
While Overwatch 2’s launch hasn't gone as planned--especially with some not realizing they would need to divulge their phone numbers in order to get access to the F2P title--perhaps day 2 will be better.
…maybe.
