New World Talks Cinematics And Telling The Story Of Aeternum
New World uses a unique art style to tell its cinematic stories.
The 2.5D illustrated cinematics in New World really go a long way to telling the story of the world in a unique way. The visuals are gorgeous and the story has been much improved since the launch of the game.
On today's episode of Forged in Aeternum, the New World team sits down to discuss finding the right style for their cinematics. The hosts are Creative Director Rob Chestney, Principal Quest Designer Lula Lucent, Principal Concept Artist Stuart Kim, and Associate Art Director Sojin Hwang.
The New World cinematics define the main characters and flesh out big story moments in the game. The staging of characters can be scenes that players have seen in the game or new scenes that will be called back to at a later time.
The New World team feels they have gotten better with these scenes over time, and really use them to set the stage for important moments. The scenes are of course also less expensive than full 3D cinematics. They're also easier to make, allowing the art team to create as many as is needed to emphasize important moments.
