New World's Already Waiting Players Won't See Brand New Content Until Aeternum In October
The current focus is on getting everything ready for Aeternum and the console launch.
When Amazon Games announced New World: Aeternum and the upcoming console launch at Summer Game Fest, PC players had a lot of questions. Today, Amazon dropped a video to answer some of those questions, and while things don’t seem quite as dire as we all might have been imagining – say a whole new game separate from the New World PC players have been running around in since the beginning – it’s probably not going to leave many of them feeling very good about the situation.
Players don’t have to worry about a new game launching and separating the community. However, that can be done a bit by the fact that anyone who hasn’t purchased Rise of the Angry Earth won’t be able to access some of the new content. That said, having content and features locked behind an expansion is nothing new in the online space. They have to make you buy them somehow.
Aeternum will allow players who would rather explore on their own to go in that direction, but they will still be playing in the same world as everyone else. The developers promise that PC players will be able to continue as they have been in Aeternum, they’ll just have more people to play with thanks to the addition of console players.
There will be a bit of restriction there, however, as console players will be able to join existing servers, but PC players will not be able to transfer existing characters to new servers. No, there won’t be cross-progression – a thing that everyone should probably be doing at this point.
So far, this doesn’t sound as bad as it could have been, but here’s where the big problem comes in. PC players asked what they will be getting, content-wise, between now and the launch in October. And, well… The answer is more or less, nothing. There will be a summer event (a returning event) and there might be some patches to fix things here or there, but there will be no content drops until the Aeternum launch. That will also be when the new season begins.
Yes. Players of the "MMORPG turned ARPG" (Editor's Note: This "genre change" is just a dumb marketing move for consoles, nothing more.) who were told to wait until June for news and trolled by devs in the process, only to hear the news that isn’t really intended for them are now being told to wait four more months for content. For those counting, that’ll be a grand total of six months of nothing.
If you’re wondering why they elected to drop the console announcement at Summer Game Fest before saying anything to the PC players, apparently there are “a lot of people who have never heard about New World” and they wanted to get the word out. Wonder whose fault that is?
