Naughty Dog Officially Cancels The Last Of Us Online
It’s for real this time.
We have bad news, or good news, depending on where you stand on this. Naughty Dog has officially announced they are ceasing development of The Last of Us Online. This might seem like a bit of deja vu, but this isn’t another rumor like we had back in October, only to be followed by news of the game director simply having taken a break. It also seems to have nothing to do with the game not being “good enough”.
The reasoning behind the decision is pretty simple, the company does not have enough resources to manage an online game while continuing to develop single-player games. Either they’d have to quit development on single-player games and throw everything they have at supporting The Last of Us Online into the future, or they had to give up on the online game in order to continue to develop single-player narrative games.
Given the company’s history, it was decided that its focus should remain on single-player games.
This is sad news for anyone who was hyped for the game, but it seems likely that most fans of Naughty Dog’s work will likely be happy to know that they will continue producing more single-player stories in the future.
