MultiVersus Open Beta To Shut Down, Full Launch Scheduled For Early 2024
Player decline, lack of content, and now no game till 2024.
MultiVersus's open beta hasn't exactly been going swimmingly lately. With an all-time peak of 153,044 players on Steam, the brawler hit the ground running. Recently, however, numbers have declined dramatically, with the latest 24-hour peak hitting a mere 817 players.
One would have to guess that the player decline has at least a small part to do with the recent announcement that MultiVersus will be shutting down its open beta on June 25th. The game isn't going away forever though, at least not according to the recent announcement from Player First Games. They are shooting for a "full release" in early 2024.
MVPs, thank you for the support during Open Beta! The feedback and inspiration has been amazing. Open Beta will close on June 25 as we prepare for full launch in early 2024. #MultiVersus will be back better than ever with new content, features, modes & more when we return. pic.twitter.com/6NOCMRDBrp

I put "full release" in quotation marks for a reason. You see, where I'm from we call a game with a full cash shop and coming up on its THIRD season of content a fully released game. Whether developers choose to continue hiding under the "beta" tag or not is up to them of course, but it's hard to justify it when you are taking money from customers openly in your cash shop AND releasing multiple live seasons of content. Or maybe that's just me.
Either way, content that has already been earned or purchased in MultiVersus will carry over to the "full release" of the game in early 2024. Let's just hope the game makes it to that point. Player First Game co-founder Tony Huynh tried to assure players that the game will return.
“We do know that this news might be disappointing, but rest assured, MultiVersus will be back," Huynk said.
“We’ll also ensure that all of your progress and content will carry over when MultiVersus returns next year, with a variety of new content, features, and modes.”
