Merc Elite begins EU Open Beta, NA Unnanounced
Well this doesn't seem very fair. In what I could only assume was an honest mistake, Bigpoint seems to have released Merc Elite -their semi-futuristic military MOBA- into Open Beta in just the EU. Normally I'd say "keep it" as I've pretty much had my fill with new MOBAs, but Merc Elite was different, or at least promised to be different. I really don't know seeing as I never got a chance to play it!
Ok, so that's not entirely true. A beta key did find its way into my lap during the closed beta, but the pond between us is a vast expanse of water, and the rubber banding was great. Merc Elite differentiates itself from its primarily fantasy brethren by pitting teams of mercenaries paid for by evil corporations against each other for control over resources.
No minions or towers, instead Merc Elite relies on mechanics and game modes more commonly found in shooters. Things like increased protection behind cover, realistic line of sight which allows enemies to sneak up behind you, and higher ground advantage are all key components in Merc Elite. Come to think of it, besides the 5 unique classes -each possessing their own weapon types and moba abilities-, Merc Elite is much more of an isometric shooter.
It's unclear whether those outside of the EU are prevented from signing up for the open beta. At this time Bigpoint has yet to announce any plans for Merc Elite in the US. From what was observed during closed beta, NA players will need servers in the US in order to play properly.
