Marvel Rivals Lets You Destroy The Environment...To A Point
Hulk Smash!
What would a superhero shooter be without some good old collateral damage? That's the question Marvel Rivals devs asked themselves, and the answer turned out to be "not much of one." That's why there are destructible environments in the shooter.
Unreal Engine 5's Chaos destruction system was a big help to the Marvel Rivals team when it came to creating the physical effects of destruction in the game. The team has spent a large amount of time customizing the Chaos system to ensure consistent environmental destruction experiences across different clients.
Of course, being a team-based shooter, Marvel Rivals devs had to find a balance between destructible environment and permanent structures. If there's not enough destructible environment, then what's the point? Too much and you end up fighting in a wasteland with no strategic choice.
The environment won't just be static and destructible, however. Take Tokyo 2099 as an example they give in the latest dev talk. As more destruction occurs, spider-bots will be deployed. In Yssgard, King Loki's determination to keep his golden kingdom will cause the buildings to repair themselves over time.
This dev talk really makes it sound like the Marvel Rivals devs are paying attention to the small details, which could lead to a fantastic game.
