Marvel's Avengers' Former Creative Director On The Game, "I Apologize For That"
“That” being the whole game.
Sometimes, you just have to come out and admit that a project you worked on just didn’t work. Sometimes that’s a bit easier to do when you’re not actually associated with the project anymore. Such is the case with the former creative director of Marvel’s Avengers Cezar Virtosu.
The developer has been away from Crystal Dynamics and, as a result, is no longer working on the superhero game as he is now focusing on The Lords of the Fallen reboot. He, along with The Lords of the Fallen executive producer, was recently interviewed by Edge Magazine (shared via Games Radar) to discuss the reboot and it didn’t take long for the topic to veer into some of Virtosu’s previous work. That included one of the more notorious games on his resume, Marvel’s Avengers.
While there are other well-known games in his list of works, Marvel’s Avengers is one that just had problems from the beginning. Those issues have resulted in profits that didn’t meet expectations and eventually the announcement that dev support would be cut.
When the topic of the game came up in the interview, Virtosu stated that it was “a challenging production”. He didn’t have much else to say beyond simply, “I apologize for that.” It’s a statement that couldn’t have felt good to make, but at least he made it.
