MapleStory Rises Outside Korea And The First Descendant Holds Steady In NEXON's Q3 Report, Company Prepares For Potential Down Q4
Q4 financials will be hit by a cancelled project's prepaid royalty impairment.
NEXON hits 30 years old this year and so far, it's been a pretty solid year. The latest financials, focused on the company's third quarter (Q3) performance ,reveal a few titles headed up, a few holding steady, and an incoming loss that could cause Q4 results to be rather flatlined.
First, the good. MapleStory continues to be on the come up, kind of. Revenue continues to rise in key areas outside of Korea, with 40% of the game's revenue coming from regions outside the country, a 23% increase. That's a decent increase and one NEXON really wants to see, even if the game's overall income is down a bit compared to a strong 3rd quarter last year. Last year's "strong Q3" will be a trend with all other games in the report, including FC.
Dungeon&Fighter continue to rake in the cash, though. The mobile version's launch of D&F in China led to an insane 142% growth for the franchise. The rest of mobile is basically down across the board, though. China mobile reveune is up due to the launch, but the PC is slowly becoming more important to NEXON's portfolio.
Looking at more "horizontal growth," we start off with The First Descendant. The looter-shooter was listed as a "significant contributor" to the company's finances with a special nod to western audiences driving 75% of the revenue. Both The Finals and ARC Raiders (which will be part of the company's G-Star show this year) are going to be depended upon for stable Q4 performance.
Speaking of Q4, NEXON is bracing for a potential loss later this year, depending on income. Due to a prepaid royalty impairment on a cancelled project, the company is forecasting a rather flatline Q4 at best, "a little up or a little down" type situation.
NEXON does still expect to complete their stock repurchase plan by February 2025, though.
