Lucid Games Reportedly Out As Developer Of Twisted Metal Reboot
Development has apparently begun at a first-part Sony studio in Europe.
A few months ago, we learned that a free-to-play reboot of Twisted Metal, the popular car-combat series of the late 20th and early 21st century, was in development by Destruction AllStars developer Lucid Games. That game received middling reviews, making Lucid a curious choice for Sony to entrust with the property.
Apparently, Sony itself agreed with that assessment, as VGC is reporting that Lucid Games is out as the developer of the reboot, which will now be handled by one of Sony's first-party studios in Europe. There was no official explanation for the change, though a source told VGC that Destruction AllStars' response may have contributed to it.
A Twisted Metal TV series, starring Anthony Mackie, is on target for 2023, so it's possible that Sony was unhappy with the rate of development for the new game, which would likely launch around the time of the show's debut. Let's hope that whoever picks up the design now doesn't face unrealistic deadlines to meet with a greater marketing push next year.
