Making A Monster: Lost Ark Gives A Behind The Scenes Look At Creating Akkan
A lot goes into creating bosses.
From concept to release, a lot of work and changes go into creating a boss in a video game. Take Lost Ark's recent horror boss Akkan. Through concept and iteration, we end up with the final version of Akkan.
Akkan's appearance is designed to represent disease, decay, and unholy rebirth. Thus the green pustules of disease on his body and the exposed heart show an imperfect resurrection. His lore of course revolves around disease and rot, not only in and on his body, but also to the surrounding area he occupies.
Then of course there is the music. Lost Ark has a fantastic soundtrack and the music for Akkan does not disappoint.
Finally, the art, lore, and sound all come together to form the overall experience of Akkan in Lost Ark. You can read the full Behind The Scenes article on the game's site.
