Looks Like Ubisoft Could Be Taking Bids On A Separate Gaming Entity Based On Some Of The Company's Core IPs
This was already a rumored potential course of action, but now it may be moving right along.
The Ubisoft saga continues. More recently a minority stakeholder could be staging a protest and a possible lawsuit based on allegations that the company hasn't appropriately communicated with shareholders. However, if you've been following the news of layoffs, the hiring of a committee to investigate financial options for the company, or the possible selling off of IPs, you may remember the company considering going private or spinning up a new entity that would be built around a few key IPs like Assassin's Creed.
Today, according to a report by Bloomberg, Ubisoft seems to be entertaining that last option and is currently looking for bids from companies that may wish to be minority stakeholders in the new entity. The anonymous sources claim that Tencent, who already owns slightly over 9% of Ubisoft, is among the companies invited to bid. Bids are reportedly being asked for as early as this month. The Guillemot family, which seeks to remain in control, is said to be seeking a valuation for the new company that exceeds the current valuation for Ubisoft.
The new entity would be focused on core Ubisoft IPs like Assassin's Creed, but the whole venture could just be exploratory for now. There's no guarantee that things could end up going this way. In response to Bloomberg's questions, Ubisoft simply referred them to recent financial statements made by the company advising they were exploring all possible options.
Assassin's Creed Shadows, after multiple delays, is slated to release on March 20th and I'm not sure if the company could possibly have more riding on the game's sales right now.
