Krafton Announces COMPETZ, Where You Can Win At Well-known PvP Games To Earn Cryptocurrency
PUBG and other Krafton titles not part of the system (yet).
When we last heard from Krafton, the PUBG: Battlegrounds and TERA developer and publisher said that it had partnered with blockchain company Solana "for the design and marketing of blockchain/NFT (non-fungible token) games and services." That announcement didn't provide any details as to what kinds of "games or services" it would spawn -- or if it would impact Krafton's existing library or be limited to new games -- but a press release today shed some additional light on exactly what the company has in mind.
Krafton subsidiary RisingWings has announced COMPETZ, described as "a blockchain-based esports service where players can compete and earn rewards based on their skills and experiences." COMPETZ will include well-known titles like Solitaire, Bingo, Pool, and Mini Golf. Players can bet on themselves for a prize pool that can be converted into cryptocurrency on the BORA blockchain platform.
The COMPETZ website includes a roadmap that includes three rounds of NFT profile picture minting, beginning in April. Bingo and Solitaire will release globally by the end of June, with other games to follow.
Regardless of your opinion of COMPETZ, at least it doesn't affect Krafton's other titles -- yet. But it's not hard to see a future where, if COMPETZ does well, Krafton implements some kind of "bet on yourself/your team" cryptocurrency-rewarding function into PUBG, which will surely be well-received by players.
