Jagex Now Accepts Bitcoin Payments For Its Games
When you think "cutting edge" and "innovative," you think "RuneScape," right? Jagex is trying to get you to think that way, not with the game itself, but with a new way to pay for it.
Starting today, Jagex will now accept cryptocurrency payments for their games, partnering with BitPay and Ayden to allow players to use bitcoins to pay for its games. In case you're not aware, bitcoins are a type of virtual currency that exist without national regulations and have been in use for years, though their objective value has fluctuated significantly.
David Parrott, Jagex's payment services director, had this to say:
"Gamers are smart. We know they get tech, and we know that for them the cryptocurrency protocol is cool and here to stay. By allowing our players to pay however they want, we remove any obstacles between them and having fun."
Microtransaction-based games are all about finding new ways to make people pay for things, so kudos to Jagex for the innovation. Still, I don't think too many people will be using bitcoins to pay for their games, Jagex or otherwise. Would you?
