Instead Of Dropping New Factions, F2P Card Game WH40K: Warpforge Is Shifting To Full-Blown Expansions
Expansions will still focus mainly on factions, but the definition of factions is also changing.
Since its launch, Everguild's F2P card game based on the Warhammer 40K universe, Warpforge, has released new cards and cosmetics as one would expect. However, they didn't follow the more "established" formulas set by competitors like Hearthstone. Rather than release expansions, Warpforge focused on releasing smaller sets that were based upon specific factions in the IP.
It's kind of neat if your favorite faction hits the rotation, but in between additions of factions or expanding a particular faction, it can feel a bit aggravating seeing your faction skipped for a few sets.
It's also created a bit of a problem for the dev team. Turns out, when you want to add a faction, it's hard to sometimes get them to play nice with some similar factions and make meaningful additions with new keywords or mechanics. To address both of these issues, Warpforge is making the leap to expansions instead of faction additions. The first of these will actually drop on April 3rd with the Beast Snaggas expansion.
Interestingly, expansions will continue to focus on factions...so how does that address the issues the devs had? Well, the word "factions" is getting a slight change. According to the team, "After the Beast Snaggas join the game, the Goff Orks faction will be renamed to Orks. This way, the Beast Snaggas and Snakebite characters that join the game will feel at home in their faction, and we will be able to introduce other Ork Klans into the game in the future."
This will happen with other factions in future expansions, too.
The new expansion's cards, of which there are 30 new cards and 2 Warlords, are obtainable via expansion booster packs, regular booster packs, in-game rewards, the Vault (a new system coming soon), and the expansion pass. Yes, you'll be able to craft the new cards after the expansion's launch event concludes. The premium version of the expansion pass opens up rewards in addition to cards. These even include the expansion's new Warlord right away.
